RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
